The 5-Minute Morning Start
A short sequence to start the day with space, breath, and clear direction.
This is a short sequence you can do in the morning to start your day with space, breath, and clear direction. It takes about 5 minutes, and it sets the tone for everything else.
The Sequence
1. Constructive Rest (2-3 minutes)
Lie on your back on the floor. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart. Let your arms rest at your sides. Let your head rest on the floor.
Just lie here. Don't try to do anything. Don't try to fix anything. Just let your body be supported by the floor and let it reset.
Stay here for 2-3 minutes. Let your body release. Let your breath become easier. Let everything settle.
2. Standing Check (30 seconds)
Roll to your side and get up slowly. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart.
Feel your feet. Let your weight go down through your feet into the ground. Feel the ground pushing back up.
Let your knees be free — not locked, not bent, just free.
Let your neck be free. Think: Let my neck be free, so that my head can go forward and up.
Let your breath move. Don't hold it.
Notice any unnecessary effort. See if you can let it go.
3. The Direction (30 seconds)
Think the forward-and-up direction a few times: Let my neck be free, so that my head can go forward and up.
Don't try to make this happen. Don't move your head. Just think the direction. Let the thought be enough.
Notice what happens. Do you feel any change? Any lengthening? Any lightness?
4. A Few Steps (30 seconds)
Take a few steps. Feel your feet. Let your weight shift forward. Let your body follow.
Let your neck be free. Let your head balance as you move.
Let your breath move. Don't hold it.
Notice if you're bracing or pushing. See if you can let it go. See if you can do less.
5. Set Your Intention (30 seconds)
Think about your day. What do you want to bring to it? Presence? Ease? Availability?
Set a simple intention: to notice when you're braced, to come back online when the old shape grabs you, to let your body support your life.
That's it. You're ready for your day.
Why This Works
This sequence works because it addresses the fundamentals: space, breath, and direction. It lets your body reset, gives it clear direction, and sets the tone for the day.
When you start your day with space, breath, and clear direction, everything else becomes easier. You're more present. You're more available. You're more at ease.
Variations
If you don't have 5 minutes, do the standing check and the direction. That's enough. Even 2 minutes helps.
If you have more time, stay in constructive rest longer. 10-20 minutes is ideal, but even 2-3 minutes helps.
If you're not a morning person, do this whenever you wake up. It doesn't have to be first thing. It just needs to be at the start of your active day.
What Changes
When you start your day with this sequence, everything changes. You're more present. You're more available. You're more at ease. You set the tone for the day, and that tone carries through.
You'll notice this most in how you move through your day: you'll be less likely to brace, less likely to collapse, less likely to accumulate tension. You'll have a baseline of ease that carries through.
This sequence is simple, but it's powerful. It sets the tone for your day, and that tone makes everything else easier.
